Summer Cup 2014 Opens; Results and Pictures

Great to see you back for the start of the 2014 season!

A few absences, but we have 33 players registered for the Summer Cup. I am still accepting entries if you're interested.
Not everyone expected turned up - one player ran out of petrol on the way to the club, and another got the start date wrong. If you find at the last minute you can't make it in time, please text me on 021-136-8645.

Nice to see Blaise Drinkwater back at the club after a long absence. He put up a very creditable fight against Michael Nyberg.

Plenty of upsets! Apart from yours truly succumbing to Lawrence Farrington, the sensation of the year (so far!) was young Joshua Wight (rating 1253) beating Alan Aldridge (rating 1964) when the latter ran out of time in a difficult position. Well done Joshua! And well done too to Patrick Cunningham who held Arthur Pomeroy to a draw on board 2.

Julian Mazur Memorial 2013 Final Crosstable

I never did get round to publishing the final cross table from the Julian Mazur Memorial that finished in December. We had a very exciting finish, thanks to Mark van der Hoorn's win against Russell Dive (annotated on the Wellington Chess Club website)

Sorry it's been a while since I updated this site. My New Year's resolution is to keep it up to date!

I am sorry I have no idea who won the transfer chess, but I suspect it was either Russell Dive or Anthony Ker. Mark van der Hoorn was unfortunately unable to be present to defend his title.

This game was won by man on form, Russell Dive (no, they weren't playing as partners). In the background are the 4 young players who took their places later on in the evening.

Congratulations to Arthur Pomeroy for bringing Russell's string of wins to a close, with a solid draw, ending an a-pawn up in an unwinnable endgame. And also to Bill Forster for his draw against number 1 player Scott Wastney, a very long and entertaining game which ended up with just a bishop and 2 kings on the board.

All this means that Anthony "just" needs to beat Russell in round 7 to take the lead.

Julian Mazur 5 - Dive Beats Wastney to take 1 Point Lead

Congratulations to Russell Dive who extended his winning streak to 14 games - he beat his main rival Scott Wastney on Thursday, and can happily make a run for the finishing line (although he hasn't played Anthony yet)

Julian Mazur Round 4 - Dive and Wastney Lead

New Zealand Champion Scott Wastney and Club Champion Russell Dive both won as black, and lead the tournament a whole point ahead of the pack. Scott had the harder pairing, against multiple times NZ Champion Anthony Ker, but was certainly assisted as usual by knowing exactly what opening his opponent would play! Russell finished his game against Bruce Kay in classy style, as you can see for yourself here

The real stories of round 4, though, lay with the youngsters, most sensationally with 6 year old Pramodh Konakanchi  who defeated Andreas Theodosiou for his second win of the tournament. Andreas offered no excuse after the game, and was clearly rattled by how quickly the youngster calculated. Pramodh's older brother Karthik, not to be outdone, drew comfortably with 1590 rated Upper Hutt player Pat Cunningham. And our star junior, Layla Timergazi, showed she is not afraid of A grade players, drawing with Bill Forster, and maintaining the good record she has against him ever since their televised chocolate chess experience.

Beate gained the exchange against Lawrence (rating difference 769 points in favour of the bearded one), and had several opportunities to win, but sadly she made a fatal mistake in the endgame, and resigned on the 85th move.
