Upper Hutt 2015 Final Cross Table

I didn't say in my last post - thank you very much to Roger Smith and Anton Reid of the Upper Hutt Chess Club for once again running a wonderful tournament on Saturday.
Thanks especially to Roger Smith for getting me the Swiss Perfect files so promptly.

Pat Cunningham, who plays at both Upper Hutt and Wellington, read my post and wrote the following:

"This report on the opening game last Saturday brought back a memory of a tournament that I played in over 40 years ago.
This was my first time, I knew nothing about chess tournaments, by mistake I was entered in the B grade of the Civic club's tournament, I should have been in the D grade section.
My first game was against Zig Frankel, he was the Editor of the Chess Magazine and a very good player!
I won the game! My next game was against the top rated player, a Mr Brown, and I won that as well.
At the tea break Zig came over to me and said "I am very pleased that you won your game against Mr Brown"
I asked him why?
He said that Mr Brown  ( I have forgotten Brown's first name) had told him that he should be ashamed of himself for letting Pat Cunningham beat him.
They were they only games that I won."

I love this sort of thing! Thanks Pat. :)

Here is the final cross table:

Scott Wastney Wins 2015 Upper Hutt Rapid

There were 32 entrants for the Upper Hutt Rapid that took place yesterday at the Hapai Club, with a large contingent from  the Wellington Chess Club. At the start of the last round, I noticed that all the players on the top four boards were Wellington players.

Scott Wastney had an early (tactical?) draw against local Gerald Carter in round 2, but then proceeded to win the last 4 games to take first prize with 5.5 out of 6. Anthony Ker, Russell Dive and Brian Nijman finished half a point behind.
Russell still doesn't seem to be on top form, at one stage he was a knight down against Pat Cunningham in round 1 before coming back with a strong kingside attack to win the game.

Full results to follow.

Autumn Cup Ends, Rapid 2015 Begins

The top four Wellington players are all playing in the Club Rapid, that started on Thursday. It will be interesting to see if Nic Croad continues his incredible run of form in this tournament.
In the Rapid there are 10 rounds with two rounds played per night. The first 2 rounds saw all the top players gain full points, although there were some notable upsets further down the table, Andriy Sknar beating Lawrence Farrington, and Andrew Brockway having a particularly terrible time, losing to Satwik and then drawing with Andreas.

First of all, the final cross tables of the Autumn Cup:

In Group A, Russell and Arthur agreed a double default, so Russell could play in the Rapid, and Arthur could go home.

In Group B, Layla beat Alan (I think), so she wins the group by an impressive margin - congratulations!

In Group D, Troy defaulted against Yogesh, so that group ended in a remarkable result, a tie between all the players! I've never seen anything quite like it.

Autumn Cup Catch-ups - Layla Takes B Grade, Ross takes C

2 catch-up games in the A Grade - Anthony Ker won against Arthur to finish on 4/5, and Russell Dive hauled himself off the bottom of the A Grade after a protracted struggle against Michael Nyberg.
One game left here, Arthur against Russell. It's a blood-thirsty group - only one draw so far!

As if anyone doubted, Layla has taken the B Grade with one game left to play. Peter Stoeveken blundered against her after 19 moves. Alan Aldridge will be quaking in his boots!

And Ross Jackson has dominated the C Group, with an impressive 4.5/5. He beat Andrew Brockway on Thursday.

The crucial game in the D Group never took place. Troy Lamerton simply did not show up, so the table still looks like this:

I stayed late on Thursday, and stole some game scores that had been left behind. Sorry I haven't annotated them.

Croad Takes Autumn Cup With 5/5. ALL HIS GAMES ANNOTATED!

An incredibly impressive performance by Nic Croad - wins against Anthony Ker, Russell Dive, Brian Nijman, Arthur Pomeroy and Michael Nyberg, a clean sweep!
There are catch up games still to go, but obviously they will not effect this year's 2015 Autumn Cup A Grade Champion.

Results
 Nijman     0-1    Croad
Nyberg      0-1    Ker
Dive          p-p    Pomeroy

Here is the cross table before the catch up games begin:

2 Ker, Anthony 2423 3 0 * 1 1 1
3 Nijman, Brian 2172 1.5 0 0 * 0 1 ½
4 Nyberg, Michael 2098 1 0 0 1 * 0
5 Pomeroy, Arthur 2103 1 0 0 1 *
6 Dive, Russell 2454 .5 0 0 ½ *

It is very weird to see Russell Dive languishing down there at the foot of the table, but he does have a couple of games still to play.

One of the many things that makes Wellington Chess Club the best chess club in the world (to my knowledge) is the way the top players are friendly and approachable, and willing to share their chess expertise with us mere mortals. We are very lucky to have Russell, Anthony, Nic and Brian at the club (and Scott, when he is playing).
Many thanks to Nic for sharing his games with us here, with annotations. And also to Brian Nijman for contributing his draw against top seed Russell Dive.

The B grade is currently being led by Bill Forster, but he has played all his games, while Layla (now aged 14) is half a point behind with two games in hand, against the lowest rated players in the group. She beat Andrew Stone on Thursday.

Great news - Bill has by and large recovered from his illness and has updated the website with his incredible escape. Follow the link here: http://www.nzchessmag.com/wellingtonchessclub/

The C grade is looking good for Ross Jackson, he has the same number of points as Don Stracy, but a game in hand against tail-ender Andrew Brockway. Don has had a particularly good tournament, unbeaten and with wins against Philip Rossiter and Patrick Cunningham.

The D grade could be a five way tie!
If Troy Lamerton loses to new boy Yogesh Kulkarni in the catch up game,  then all the players will have 2 points.

Sadly Mike Asplet missed a couple of games early on, and decided it wasn't worth staying in the competition.

And finally the E grade, where Colwyn Forlong-Ford has dominated, taking a half point bye in the first round and following it up with four wins out of four. Josh Wight is only half a point behind, but Colwyn must be favourite in this group. One round left to play here.
