48 players signed up for the Autumn Cup this year, which is excellent. Chess players being chess players, however, a few people mysteriously failed to turn up.
Nice to see the NZ Champion Scott Wastney back in action at the club, he got held to a draw by Nic Croad in round 1.
Results mostly went as expected. For this tournament, you are likely to be playing against people roughly the same strength as yourself, but it'll be interesting to see how the new people get on.

Croad Wins Fischer Random for Third Year Running
With a win against Fabian Day, and a draw in the final round against Anthony Ker, Nic Croad once again showed his complete dominance in this most fascinating chess variant. He finished on 5.5 points, a full point ahead of Anthony, Russell and Brian Nijman. Congratulations!
My own performance was brightened up with a win against Anthony in round 3, but my last round game was a complete disaster where I threw away a rook in an interesting and quite balanced position.against Russell Dive.

Ker and Croad Share Wellington Open 2017
Congratulations to Anthony Ker and Nic Croad for winning this year's edition of the Wellington Open.
This was a six round Swiss held at the CQ Hotel in Cuba Street, central Wellington. Players came from all over the country, and one each from France and Canada. Wild weather was hitting the country at the start of the tournament, but in the event only two players were unable to make the first round due to cancelled flights. The overall turnout was 38 players.
Favourites at the start of the tournament were three top Wellington players, Anthony Ker, Nic Croad and Russell Dive. The decisive results turned out to be Anthony and Nic drawing with each other, and Anthony beating Russell.

Russell Wins 2017 Summer Cup

Anthony Ker Tops the Latest NZCF Ratings
The latest rating list has been published by the New Zealand Chess Federation, and is available on the New Zealand Chess website here
Congratulations to Anthony Ker for regaining the top place, nudging Auckland's Ben Hague into second place.
Congratulations also to Layla Timergazi for becoming highest rated female player in New Zealand for the first time, 58 points ahead of North Shore's Helen Milligan. Layla has also moved up to 5th in the Club rankings, overtaking Brian Nijman and Arthur Pomeroy. She is 29th in the country overall.
So Wellington Chess Club now has the top rated active player in the country, the New Zealand Champion (Scott Wastney) and the top female player!

Summer Cup R6 Dive Leads Two Rounds to go
No Summer Cup this week because of the AGM tonight.
If you weren't at the AGM, you didn't miss anything momentous. Afterwards I got a few blitz games in, against Bill (fairly even) and Arthur Pomeroy (who crushed me mercilessly).
Anyway I didn't update round 6 before, so here it is. Russell Dive had black against Nic Croad, which he managed to win, so he retains his half point lead over Anthony Ker. Now the top players have all played each other so they have to come down the ratings list quite considerably for their final two games. In round 7 next week Russell gets me, while Anthony is paired against Fabian Day, who scored a magnificent win against Alan Aldridge last week.
