Club Championship Week 2

The Club Championship is already a mess of postponements, particularly in the D grade, where not a single one of the scheduled games took place. (Instead a couple of round 9 games were brought forward to accommodate the players who actually showed up).
In the A Grade Scott and Russell are still wending their way homewards, so their opponents played each other, the game that should be played in week 7.
Nothing too outrageous happened. Pomeroy v Ker was a reprise of their game 2 weeks ago, which ended in a draw, but Anthony varied first and ended up not so bad this time.
Layla bounced back from her round 1 defeat by Nic to checkmate Bill in 31 moves.
The B grade is being led by club captain Phil Rossiter with 2/2, although the top seeds in this group have played one game fewer.
Fabian Day leads the C grade, and Alexis Wevers and Sarah Bennett lead the D grade, all with 2/2. Again they have benefitted from having played more games than some of their opponents.

Scott Wastney Gains Double IM Norm in Baku

Congratulations to Scott Wastney who gained a double IM norm at the Baku Olympiad.
Previously I said he had gained the IM title, but I'm still not sure if that's the case.
Here is the last round game he had to win for the norms. He makes it look so easy!

Update re the norms (and the comments), Russell sent this from Dubai where he's waiting for his connection back home:

"Just to clarify Scott's IM situation, he still needs another IM norm and he also needs to get his FIDE rating over 2400 before he gets the IM title.  He needs about another 60 rating points and is hoping to gain some of them in the Wellington Club Champs (assuming that this is FIDE rated).  I'm not sure how willing his Wellington Club Championship competitors are to contribute to his cause.  We shall see in the next few months!!!

I think both teams performed alright at the Olympiad.  The women's team significantly improved their ratings, while the three young girls (aged 10, 13 and 15) all gained valuable experience and will be better players for having played in the Olympiad.  The Open team obviously had Scott's double IM norm to celebrate and if my memory serves me right, this might be the first double IM norm achieved in the Open team at an Olympiad, since a certain Russell Dive achieved one at the 1994 Moscow Olympiad.  If that is in fact correct, it's been a long 22 year wait for another one!!!  This is also the last Olympiad that double norms will be given out (they resort to single norms at the next Olympiad in Batumi, Georgia in 2018, so Scott picked a great time to do it."

Analysis from Arthur Pomeroy and Brian Nijman

Good luck to Scott Wastney as he attempts to convert himself from an FM to an IM in Baku today. He needs a win against Harold Wanyama (FIDE rating 2251) in the last round match between New Zealand and Uganda.

Many thanks to Arthur Pomeroy and Brian Nijman for some quality analysis of their recent club games.

Here is Arthur Pomeroy, and his game against Anthony Ker in the last round of the Julian Mazur Memorial.Normally you'd be pretty happy with a draw against Anthony, but in this case Arthur was two pawns up and had high hopes of the full point...

And here is Brian Nijman analysing his win against Ross Jackson in the first round of the Club Championship. Brian, not for the first time, conjures up a winning out of nothing. Apparently, earlier on Ross offered a draw in a dead equal position, which Brian would have accepted if he hadn't been listening to music through his headphones at the time.

Club Championship 2016 Begins!

Slight confusion for the first round of the Club Championship. Why are so many chess players unable to say if they are playing in an event before the first round is due to start? Is it some sort of chess-induced behavioural irregularity?

Anyway, I'm still awaiting the full line-up of most of the groups, but the A grade is fine. It's very strong - too strong for me, I failed to qualify for the first time in many years.

Dive v Wastney postponed due to both players slugging it out in Baku, but here are the other A grade results:

Croad, Nic      1-0        Timergazi, Layla
Forster, Bill      1/2-1/2  Pomeroy, Arthur
Ker, Anthony   1-0        Nyberg, Michael
Nijman, Brian   1-0        Jackson, Ross

Many thanks to Bill for providing some extremely entertaining notes to his escape against Arthur

Dive Wins Julian Mazur 2016 in Absentia

Russell Dive missed the last round of the Julian Mazur Memorial because he is in Baku ready to play in the Olympiad that starts today. Arthur Pomeroy did him an enormous favour by drawing with Anthony Ker, although from all accounts he should have beaten the IM, being 2 pawns up in the endgame. Still I think Arthur deserves at least one beer.
So Russell finished on 7/8, a draw plus a half point bye. Anthony had draws against Russell, Nic Croad and Arthur, finishing on 6.5/8. And just behind Anthony was Nic Croad with his first round bye, and his accident against Andrew Stone in  round 4.

That's it for this tournament, looking forward to the big one, the Club Championship starting next week. Meanwhile don't forget you can follow all the action in Baku online, and even follow Russell and Scott's games live, if you don't mind staying up all hours. Modern technology is wonderful!
