Autumn Cup - Anthony beats Scott, 1 round to go

Apologies for the late publishing this week. There is one week left of the official games, with a catch up week to follow. Some of the lower groups are in a terrible state, there are so many results missing. It beats me why people sign up for these tournaments if they are not going to turn up for the games, but there you go.

In the A grade, Anthony beat Scott to maintain his 100% record. Nic beat Russell, and is 1 point behind Anthony with 1 day to go. Anthony has to play Layla, while Nic gets Scott in the last round.

I don't know how the Wastney-Ker game went, sorry, both these players are rather coy about sharing their games.

Brian Nijman took the lead in the B grade with a win against Bill Forster. I had another terrible experience, and, bizarrely, in both the last 2 weeks, Bill Forster had to tell me after the game how I could have drawn the rook and pawn ending.

Ross is leading the C grade with his closest rival Yogesh stumbling in his game against Philip Rossiter, and in the D grade, Bob List is looking good with 3 wins out of 3.

Autumn Cup w3 - Anthony Leads, Layla Beats Scott

There were some very exciting games in the 3rd week of the Autumn Cup, not least of course because there was the latest instalment of Ker v Dive to look forward to. In the event, Anthony made it look (comparatively) easy to beat Russell, as he launched a blistering attack on his queenside castled king. Astonishing.
No less remarkable, and in many ways more so, was Layla's victory over Scott with the black pieces. Scott sacrificed a rook (soundly) in a terrifying attack on Layla's king, but she defended resolutely and incredibly accurately, until in the final position it is Scott's king that is ready to capitulate.
Bear in mind that Layla is giving away nearly 300 rating points, and she hasn't even reached her 15th birthday yet. I think this may be her first victory over one of the "Gang of Four" in a long game, but please correct me if I am wrong about this.
The other group A game finished quickly (14 moves) with Ben Thomas blundering in the opening against Nic Croad.
In the B grade Bill Forster surrendered his lead to Michael Nyberg, I think he got his openings mixed up and got beaten very quickly. I had an interesting game against Brian Nijman (annotated by Brian below) which I really should have held, but my memory of rook and pawn endings let me down.
Ross leads the C grade, but watch out for Yogesh Kulkarni, half a point behind, but with a game in hand.
Skipping down to grade G, very nice to see 2 of our teenage players, Ryan and Sarah, doing well, both on 3/3. It'll be interesting to see the result when they play each other.
