Autumn Cup - Anthony beats Scott, 1 round to go

Apologies for the late publishing this week. There is one week left of the official games, with a catch up week to follow. Some of the lower groups are in a terrible state, there are so many results missing. It beats me why people sign up for these tournaments if they are not going to turn up for the games, but there you go.

In the A grade, Anthony beat Scott to maintain his 100% record. Nic beat Russell, and is 1 point behind Anthony with 1 day to go. Anthony has to play Layla, while Nic gets Scott in the last round.

I don't know how the Wastney-Ker game went, sorry, both these players are rather coy about sharing their games.

Brian Nijman took the lead in the B grade with a win against Bill Forster. I had another terrible experience, and, bizarrely, in both the last 2 weeks, Bill Forster had to tell me after the game how I could have drawn the rook and pawn ending.

Ross is leading the C grade with his closest rival Yogesh stumbling in his game against Philip Rossiter, and in the D grade, Bob List is looking good with 3 wins out of 3.

  1. Actually I don't recall telling you how to draw your previous rook and pawn ending (versus Brian) - but for the record - a good rule to remember is that in R+P v R if your king is securely in front of the pawn it's a draw. The normal method is Philidor's third rank defence but in the special case of a g pawn it's even easier than that. Set up your king and rook as if you've just castled kingside - so king on g1, rook on f1 and you are golden. This is because there is no room for the opponents rook to approach from the other side. The b pawn is a mirror image (obviously), put your king on b1 and rook on c1.

  2. It must have been someone else then. In any case, I had a definite sense of deja vu!
