Congratulations to Satwik Meravanage, one of our contingent of young players and stalwart of Thorndon School's chess team. He scored the first upset of this tournament by beating Andrew Sknar Snr. He was followed later on in the evening by Mark Wilkins (beating Andrew Stone) and Efrain Tionko (drawing with myself). Andrew Brockway and Andreas Theodosiou had completely won positions against Bill Forster and Jonathon Whittle respectively, but went wrong at the end.
The top four won comfortably enough. the most exciting game was where Mark van der Hoorn played a speculative (i.e. dubious) sacrifice on e6, that demanded more accurate defending than his opponent was capable of.
