We do have some champions now!
Congratulations to William Scarlett, the winner of the D grade. He was totally dominant, and we sort of knew he'd won, but we had to wait for the people who have wandered off without finishing their games to have zeros put next to their name for the title to be confirmed.
And congratulations to Yogesh Kulkarni in the C grade. He won every single game! A couple of the games I played through, he seemed to have got a bit lucky, but this is still an amazing achievement - I look forward to seeing how Yogesh gets on against the higher rated players in tournaments to come.
The important Aldridge-Stoeveken fixture in the B grade did not take place on Thursday, so we have to wait another week to see if Alan can overtake Ross to become the B grade champion.
Russell Dive defeated Bill Forster to take the lead in the A grade, half a point ahead of Nic Croad. Importantly, Scott Wastney also won his game against Anthony Ker to stay in contention for the title. In what seemed a fairly innocuous position with all the minor pieces swapped off, Scott chased Anthony's king all the way over to the other side of the board to land in a mating trap. Very impressive!
So Scott needs to defeat Michael Nyberg in the final catch-up game, due to be played this Thursday, to overtake Russell and become the 2015 overall Club Champion. Remember that Michael earlier on in the tournament upset Anthony in their clash, but he will have to play better than he did against me last week if he wants to make an impression on a very much in form Scott.
