Julian Mazur Round 2 - 6 Players on Full Points

Welcome to new members Nick Barr and Philipp Strokov, who joined the Julian Mazur Memorial tournament for round 2. We are also due another new player next week, Cameron Phillips, bringing the total number of entrants to a very respectable 39.
Not too much in the way of upsets this week, although Andrew Brockway got a good result to draw with Roger Perry, and could indeed have won that game, I'm told.
I was quite pleased with my effort, so I hope to get time to publish it, and other games, later in the week.
Meanwhile, do not forget that the Olympiad starts today, with 4 of our members in attendance. There should be plenty of coverage round and about the internet, so watch out for that.

Wellington Players in Norway

The Olympiad is only a couple of days away. Russell And Anthony have been staying in Oslo with the NZCF ratings officer Rowan Wood. Marany last messaged from Bergen I think! They will all meet up in Tromso on 1st August, and the first day of play is 2nd August.

Russell writes:

"Anthony and I are staying with Rowan and his family in Oslo until we fly up to Tromso on 1 August.  This is my fourth visit to Norway, so I've seen a reasonable amount of it.  It certainly is expensive!!!

I see we are ranked 75th in the Olympiad out of 150 countries, so as long as everyone turns up we'll be playing the bottom ranked team from Tanzania.  However, if just one of the bottom half teams doesn't show, then we'll get Russia instead in Round 1!!!

Assuming that everyone turns up, it looks like the Women will get the 3rd ranked Ukraine team in the first round, so a good challenge for [the NZ women] in Round 1...

Julian Mazur Memorial Starts

Round 1 (of 8) of the Julian Mazur Memorial 2014 took place last night. A warm welcome to Phillip Coghini and Bubbles Patuwai playing in their first tournament at the club, although I believe Phillip used to play at one of the Wellington Clubs a few years ago.
Because of the Olympiad in Norway we have temporarily lost Russell Dive, Anthony Ker, Layla Timergazi and Marany Flack - and also Mark van der Hoorn and Brian Nijman are not playing, so the average rating is probably down a bit this year. But there is absolutely no shortage of enthusiasm, or indeed exciting and inventive chess.

Most of the games went to the higher seed, although not without a fight. The biggest upset was undoubtedly Bob List losing in 8 moves with the white pieces against Beate Aumeier (game to be published later).

2014 Blitz - Ker, Dive, Nyberg Share First

The blitz is for me always one of the highlights of the year - always entertaining, fast-moving, and has the tendency to produce some remarkable results. Last year we had the reigning New Zealand champion being beaten by a 12-year-old Layla Timergazi, and this year we had no less memorable a result, with the current club number 3 being beaten by 6-year-old Pramodh Konakanchi.
Restricting the game to just 5 minutes per player is bound to cause some upsets, (like me beating Russell Dive for example!), but some people are just more skilled at this level. Such as Bob List, who is right in his element here, and even more so Michael Nyberg. It was Michael who, once again, rose to the top of the table, taking the title jointly with our perennial elite, Dive and Ker.

We had 27 players at the start of the tournament, although this rose to 28 when Anthony Ker prevailed upon Don Stracy to step a long way outside his comfort zone, and participate too. Don came up to me later with a worried expression, "This tournament isn't rated is it?".

We split the field into three all-play-all groups, with the top 3 in each group going forward to the final. Russell and Anthony won all the games in their respective groups, but in the C group Nic Croad didn't have it so easy, losing to Pramodh as mentioned above, and drawing with Michael Nyberg. In fact Michael won this group.

In the final all the players suffered some accidents, but Anthony, Russell and Michael suffered fewer than others, finishing on 6/8 half a point ahead of Nic Croad who thus ended up 4th.

A nice friendly send-off, then, to Dive and Ker as they prepare to head off, along with Marany and Layla, to the Olympiad in Norway to battle with the rest of the world, . We wish them every success!
