Autumn Cup 2019 - Wastney v Ker to Decide

On Thursday we finished the Autumn Cup proper, but the rather large matter of catch-up games is still to happen.
Of primary importance in the A grade is Wastney v Ker, as a decisive result will mean that the winner will be Autumn Champion, while a draw will mean Nic Croad could catch up with both.
Here is Nic playing an extraordinary game against Russell Dive in round 5:

The B grade has now been won by Edgar Benitez. His draw against me means that nobody can catch him

Here is Edward Tanoi losing rather painfully to Andrew Stone from a won position (notes by Edward)

Upper Hutt Rapid - Wellington Players Dominant

The ever-popular annual Upper Hutt Open Rapid took place yesterday, 15th June, and was dominated by Wellington players.
The A grade was won by Scott Wastney, who also won the Kapiti Rapid last month.
Brian Nijman reports that he was leading with a round to go, but then lost to Anthony. Brian ended up  sharing second with Anthony and Russell (whom he beat in his normal fashion - ditto for his win against Edgar). Ross drew with Scott in round 1, which was generous since Ross had a winning position and over two minutes on his clock compared to Scott who was playing on increment. Michael Sole won the B-grade with 5.5.
Paul He won all his games (the only player to do so) to win his grade.
Full results will no doubt be published on the NZCF website in due course. I am grateful to Brian for sending me two of his games from this tournament.

Autumn Cup 1 round to go

Been a while, sorry.
Thought I'd celebrate my resumption of club captain duties with an update of what's going on at the club at the moment. We have got 1 week left of the Autumn Cup, plus the catch-up week. This is graded round robin groups of 6, apart from the lowest grade G which is a Swiss.
In the A grade all of the players have lost at least 1 game. The biggest upset has been Russell Dive losing to Brian Nijman in round 3 after a winning endgame went wrong for Russell. Round 4 included an entertaining game between Scott and Russell where Scott's position seemed more dominant than it actually was, and a tactic that seemed to win actually lost, because of Scott's queen running out of squares

Summer Cup 2019 Begins

After the offbeat brilliance of last week, we were back to business as usual at the chess club. The Summer Cup, traditionally the first tournament of the year, began with a record breaking line-up of 58 players, which includes the returning ex NZ Champion Scott Wastney, and the Maltese Candidate Master David Cilia Vincenti, who has recently moved to Wellington from Christchurch.
A warm welcome to all our new players, too many to mention here!

The tournament as usual is an eight round Swiss, with one round being played per week.
Round 1 of a Swiss is generally a one-sided affair, but there were some upsets. Most notable was Daniel Kibblewhite's victory over Bill Forster. Thanks to Bill for sending me this:

It was great to see the return of Jack Baker, who has something of a maverick style, perhaps because he was one of Mark van der Hoorn's first pupils in the early 2000's. Here he plays a brilliant attacking game against new member Wallace Enegbuma, is about to deliver checkmate, but then falters and loses.

Congratulations also to Nicholas Heyworth and Jamie Quayle for coming away with draws from high rated opponents.

Timur Gareyev at the Wellington Chess Club

We were very privileged to be able to host a blindfold simultaneous exhibition at the Wellington Chess Club last Thursday given by the world record holder GM Timur Gareyev who currently resides in the USA.
If you don't already know, He played 12 games, of which he won 8, drew 3 (Russell Dive, Anthony Ker and Michael Sole) and lost 1.
Unlike other visiting grandmasters doing simuls, Timur takes the black pieces on alternate boards. Nigel Short, for example, took white on every board when he visited.

The game he lost was to Wellington College school student Ryan Winter. This was going pretty well for Timur until some time after 1 am (!) when he made a blunder.
Anthony and Russell were playing with blank boards without any pieces, but they were allowed score sheets so they could see what moves had been played. Russell ended up with a won position, but with only seconds on his clock (no increment for the challengers) they agreed a gentlemanly draw.
Michael Sole refused a draw offer early on, after which Timur sacrificed a bishop for some pawns. The game was fairly even when Michael made a draw offer back, which was accepted.

Nathan Hall Dominates the C Grade

In the Club Championship the C Grade was dominated from start to finish by talented newcomer Nathan Hall, and he finished a clear point ahead of his nearest rival, returning player Edward Tanoi.
Caleb He was the only player to beat Nathan - Caleb would no doubt have finished higher, but he was busy travelling around the country playing in chess tournaments and only got to play in 6 out of the 9 rounds.

Hall v Farrington from an earlier encounter

I am grateful to Nathan for annotating one of his key wins in this tournament, against venerable trooper Lawrence Farrington. Nathan has the black pieces.

Club Championships 2018 - Final Tables

Hi,
It's been a while, I don't know if anyone out there is still looking at this blog.
I thought the official Wellington Chess Club website would have published the Championship results by now, but they haven't, so I'll do it here.

Congratulations to our winners, Nic Croad, Edgar Benitez and Nathan Hall. I see that Nic's fantastic results in 2018 have meant that finally he has overtaken Russell Dive in the latest FIDE rating list, and he is only 11 points behind the top rated Wellington player Anthony Ker.

If anyone wants me to publish any of the games from this tournament, please let me know.
