Club Championship Round 5

 Welcome to Nigel and Tai Corbett and George McBride, all of whom have signed up albeit belatedly to the D grade.

Russell won and Anthony lost was the important news for the A grade. Russell beat the early leader Roger Perry, thus continuing his 100% record and extending his lead to one and a half points. Anthony was beaten by the number 3 seed Nic who, up to this point only had half a point, although he has had a couple of people postpone on him. My game against Brian can be seen on the official club website. It was a pretty inaccurate game, although, in our defence, we were playing the last moves at approaching 1.00 am, Brian having turned up an hour late for the start.

B grade pace-setter Mark Wilkins was held by draw-master Ross Jackson, and so now there is a new leader in this group in the shape of Mike Roberts with an unbeaten 3.5 out of 5, although he has played one more game than his nearest rival.

The C grade is being dominated by Pat Cunningham, on fine form, and this week beating the luckless Bob List rather quickly.

And in the D grade Jack Baker had to take a bye to study for his university exams, so this gave other people a chance to catch up. His nearest rival Satwik Meravanage could have closed the gap, but unfortunately he wore himself out playing cricket, and so took a bye also. He is joined, one point behind Jack, by Bubbles Patuwai, who scored a victory against William Scarlett.

Club Championship 2014 Round 3

The big guns of the A grade were back in action after their adventures in the bridge nationals in Hamilton. And in the clash between the number 1 and number 3, it was Russell Dive who came out on top. Remember Russell won this event last year with straight wins, and so far he is on course to repeat the performance (early days yet though).
Bill Forster won a brilliant game against the tournament leader, and so places himself in the chasing pack along with Layla, Anthony and Michael Nyberg. Michael came fresh from the George Trundle Challengers in Auckland where he tied for second place after leading for much of the event, and this week he scored a very good win against Brian Nijman.
In the B grade already there are no players on 100%, but Alan Aldridge and Mike Roberts are leading on 2 points.
Pat Cunningham is healthily on top of the C grade, three wins out of three, with new member Aran Mol snapping at his heels with two out of two. Hamish Dixon scored his first win, against Robert List.
And in the D grade Jack Baker quickly defeated his nearest challenger Satwik Meravanage, although new member Colwyn Forling-Ford is right behind, with 2 wins and a bye in the first round.

Welcome to Colwyn Forlong-Ford, student at Victoria University, playing in his first tournament at the club.
It was very sad to hear about the death of one of our longest-standing members, Bruce Kay. He was liked by all and will be sorely missed.

Club Championship 2014 Begins

First of all, congratulations to Beate Aumeier on her new role as head chocolatier at the Chocolate Factory in Eva Street.

To celebrate, Beate brought in a load of the nicest chocolate coated coffee beans I have ever tasted. We are very lucky to have someone so talented, kind and generous at the club.

A warm welcome to Hamish Dixon, who has taken a break of some 12 years, and returns to competitive chess in the C grade of the club championship. Welcome also to Aran Mol from the Netherlands, playing in the same grade.
Nice to see the return of Al Nicholls, and the A grade players Russell Dive, Anthony Ker, Brian Nijman and Layla Timergazi.

Club president Ross Jackson very generously gave up his place in the A grade (which he earned by winning the B grade last year), which means that all the A grade players are above the 2000 mark. The A grade was keenly fought last night, with both Brian Nijman and Bill Forster earning draws against higher rated opposition.

Mark Wilkins and Peter Stoeveken take the early lead in the B grade, winning against Al Nicholls and Alan Aldridge respectively.

The C grade looks particularly interesting to me, as there are a number of players whose strength I haven't been able to fully ascertain. All the games played were decisive.

And in the D grade, which is a Swiss, all the games went to the higher seeded player. Jack Baker is easily the favourite here, but I hope he gets some challenging games nonetheless.

Vikas Shenoy Triumphs in Johnsonville

Many thanks to Scott Wastney for organising the Rapid tournament in Johnsonville at the weekend. 11 of our members took part, just over half the field. It turned into a terrific triumph for young Vikas Shenoy, who is not at the Club but should be! Congratulations to him. Great result also for Tristan Phease, whom I haven't come across before.

Julian Mazur Memorial Final - Croad Delivers

Congratulations to Nic Croad on two fronts! On Saturday he became father to Arthur Lachlan Croad. And last night he won the Julian Mazur Memorial by beating joint leader Mark Wilkins. Andrew Stone or I could have caught him by winning our game, but we drew, so Nic gets the title to himself. Joining Andrew and me on 2nd place was Roger Perry who won a long difficult game against Michael Nyberg.

Julian Mazur Round 7 - Wide Open, One Round To Go!

The winner of this tournament is now impossible to pick. Nic had to take a bye because of family commitments, and it seems unlikely he will be able to make the final round. The co-leader from last week, Michael Nyberg, was beaten by me, so now we have a 4-way tie for first place - Nic, me, Andrew Stone and Mark Wilkins. Andrew was re-paired against Peter Stoeveken after his opponent Philip Rossiter didn't turn up, and won in style. Ross Jackson had a winning position but blundered terribly to lose to Mark Wilkins.
