There were 32 entrants for the Upper Hutt Rapid that took place yesterday at the Hapai Club, with a large contingent from the Wellington Chess Club. At the start of the last round, I noticed that all the players on the top four boards were Wellington players.
Scott Wastney had an early (tactical?) draw against local Gerald Carter in round 2, but then proceeded to win the last 4 games to take first prize with 5.5 out of 6. Anthony Ker, Russell Dive and Brian Nijman finished half a point behind.
Russell still doesn't seem to be on top form, at one stage he was a knight down against Pat Cunningham in round 1 before coming back with a strong kingside attack to win the game.
Full results to follow.
