Layla Joint NZ Junior Rapid Champion

Fantastic result for Layla, playing in the New Zealand Junior Rapid tournament in Waitakere. Bear in mind that she is only 12, and the tournament was open to players up to the age of 20. Also, the first girl ever to win this competition.

Good luck to Layla in the NZ Junior (standard time) Championship which is on now until Friday.

Rapid - Dive on Form with Six Straight Wins

The Club Rapid reaches its final week this week with Russell Dive brushing aside the opposition, and seeing off his traditional rival Anthony Ker in round 8. I didn't see any of that game, but I did see him torturing Mark van der Hoorn in the previous round with a typically Divesque queen side storm - vintage stuff! Mark came back the following round to dispose of the upstart Alan Aldridge, who had previously had an unbeaten run, including victory over Bill the previous round (you can see that game on the website)
Further down the list, Rama Rao Miriyala is having a great tournament (three wins, one draw, no losses), but he has missed 2 weeks' play. Roshan avenged himself against Pat Cunningham, reversing their result in the Autumn Cup which decided the E grade title.
Unfortunately, Layla was absent through sickness this week, and she will also miss the last 2 rounds as she is playing in Auckland. Hopefully we'll see her back at the club soon.

Kiwi Chess Championship Report

Thanks to Scott for providing the report below on the tournament he ran for his intermediate and primary school pupils. Congratulations especially to Karthik, who also plays at our club.

The Kiwi Chess Championship

The Kiwi Chess Championship is a tournament each term to decide the champion from Kiwi Chess classes.   The tournament was held on Saturday 6th July and run as a 6 round Swiss with a time control of 15 minutes plus 5 second increments.  The Intermediate and Primary grades were combined this term.   Two primary school players were tied for first equal and Intermediate trophy was presented to Karthik Konakanchi (higher tie-break) and the primary trophy to Sam Merton.  Karthik’s younger brother won the Middle Primary Trophy (year 4 and under) by tie-break.  An impressive result considering Pramodh is a year 1 student and this was his first tournament.

Karthik Konakanchi (right) against Xandi Gobbi (left).  In the background Alan Zhang against Oliver McCready.

Vincent Luo shows perfect technique to checkmate with rook and king.

July Ratings

Here are the latest NZCF ratings for Wellington Chess Club members

Rank numbers are for all New Zealand active players - once again Wellington Chess Club has the top 3 active players in the country. I have filtered for just Wellington, Upper Hutt and "KJ" which I think refers to Scott's (and Mark's?) pupils, so you can see the progress of up-and-coming talents like Karthik Konakanchi and Vaibhav Sharma.

Let me know if you have any questions

Club Rapid week 3 - Dive Moves into the Lead

Over halfway through the club rapid, and everything has changed at the top. Of last week's leaders, Alan gets half point byes for missing rounds 5 and 6, and Ross had the misfortune of being paired against Anthony and Russell in successive rounds. In round 6 Anthony was unable to convert his small material advantage in an endgame against Mark van der Hoorn, letting Russell steal into the lead with his victories over Michael Nyberg and Ross.

Michael bounced back from his loss to Russell by beating Brian Nijman in round 6, thus avenging himself for his defeat in the last round of the Upper Hutt Rapid 5 days before.Bill had a good week, beating Mark Wilkins and Lawrence Farrington, thus joining the pack half a point behind the leader Russell Dive.

Sadly, Scott decided not to participate in the Club Rapid, having missed the first 2 weeks, and with a busy schedule organising schools' chess. I hope to be able to publish a report from him soon regarding the Primary Interschool competition he has been running.

Jack James Wins Feilding Rapid - pictures

Thank you very much to Mark Noble and his team for the brilliant job in hosting the 2nd Feilding Rapid tournament which took place at the Hokowhitu Bowling Club in Palmerston North yesterday. There was a very respectable field of 29 players from Palmerston North, Wellington, New Plymouth, Wanganui and Hamilton. Results have already been posted here:

http://www.newzealandchess.co.nz/results.html

Six Wellington Chess Club members travelled up to Palmerston North to take part in the competition, and all of us finished in the top half of the table. None of our top three players took part, so the rest of us had a decent chance of taking the title. Defending champion Ross Jackson once again put up an excellent showing, and tied with Palmerston North's Jack James and Wanganui's Chris Burns on 5 out of 6. However, since there was a trophy to play for, and this trophy had to find a mantelpiece to sit on, there was a super-blitz play-off with 1 minute each on the clock. Jack James' young brain (or nerves) triumphed over the old guard in this very stressful form of chess, although Chris should have won his game, as he was heaps of material up but then placed his queen next to Jack's bishop where it could be taken.

So congratulations to Jack James on his victory. Also to WCC member Bob List for taking the under 1650 prize.

Many thanks to Janeen Noble for taking the pictures below

Club Rapid Rounds 3-4

Nice to have Russell Dive back with us after his sojourn in the Netherlands. He, Anthony, and the two Marks all joined us for the second week of the Rapid, and proceeded to win both their games. Scott was unable to play because he was busy with schools chess, so he has a rather difficult job if he wants to win this tournament (you are only allowed two half point byes). Round 4 saw a draw between the two leaders, Alan and Ross, which puts them both half a point of the (rather intimidating) pack. I recovered from my stormy first week, but my chess was far from convincing.
