Autumn Cup Round 3 - Croad Avenges Himself

I think I have most of the results from Thursday, just a few games from the E group I am not sure about. Maybe you can help?

Nic, who has basically been cleaning up in everything at the club so far this year, got the chance to avenge himself on Michael Nyberg, who swindled a win against him in the Wellington Easter tournament. So now he has 3/3 in the Autumn Cup, ahead of Anthony Ker who is on 2/2 with one game to catch up on.
I asked Anthony before his game if he was going to be kind to Russell, since it was the latter's birthday. He replied that as a birthday present he was going to give Russell an interesting game! And so it turned out, with Russell's knight not being a match for Anthony's pawns in the endgame.
In the other A group game, Arthur lost on time against Brian Nijman in a fairly complex position, I believe.

More Autumn Cup Round 2 + Instructive Ending

Here are the results and cross table for the E Group, also hit by weather-related absences.

And below that, I have stolen a very instructive ending from Andrew Brockway's Facebook page!
In the initial position shown, he was black against Don Stracy, and agreed a draw. When he got home, he put the game through the computer and realized that there was a win to be had. I'm not sure I would have found it, would you?

Autumn Cup 2015 Begins

The Autumn Cup started on 7th May, with a reasonable turnout. The A grade looks particularly strong, with NZ champions Nic, Russell and Anthony being joined by Arthur, Brian and Michael Nyberg, demoting Layla to the B grade (but only just).

I'm afraid I do not have all the results yet, as I am no longer club captain. Here are all the results I know, if you can help me add more I will happily publish them here:

A grade: Croad beat Dive, Ker v Pomeroy was postponed, and Nijman v Nyberg was still going on when I left.

B grade: Sellen 1/2 Timergazi 1/2, Forster beat Aldridge, Stone was doing well against Stoveken

C grade: Jackson beat Rossiter

Here is my slightly lucky escape against Layla:

Quentin Johnson on Layla's Victory

I'm a bit slow, I only just discovered Quentin Johnson's article on the 2015 Wellington Open, which was won jointly by Layla Timergazi and David Cilia Vincenti - here it is:

http://otagochess.wikispaces.com/ODT150428

For those of you who don't know, Quentin Johnson writes, to my knowledge, the only chess column in a New Zealand newspaper, in the Otago Daily Times. Wouldn't it be great if one of the Wellington newspapers had something similar? And isn't a column entitled "Girl Power Wins Through" so much better publicity than TV3's vile, lying, misleading take on chess, featuring the regurgitated ramblings of a 7 year old proto-sexist?

I'm not providing the link to that story, you can find it yourself if you're interested.

Fischer Random Final - Croad Scores Perfect 6

Nic Croad scored victories against Layla Timergazi and Russell Dive to finish the event on a perfect 6 out of 6. Congratulations Nic!
Anthony Ker was second on 5/6, with just the one loss to Nic in round 3.

Beate was unable to make it for the final week because she was making preparations for getting married. Her wedding was yesterday, so congratulations Beate!!

It really surprises me how unenthusiastic our members are about playing Fischer Random chess, most of them opting to play to their familiar normal rules in the parallel Rapid tournament. But isn't the mental challenge the main reason we play chess?

One of the things about Fischer Random is of course you get into completely unfamiliar looking positions. Here is part of my game against Anthony Ker. I thought I had a reasonable attack going earlier on the king side, but after his king had sheltered behind my pawn on h7, I found it very hard to make progress. Meanwhile on the queen side, bad things were happening.
