Dive the Club Champion Again!

Congratulations to Russell Dive, who has 8 out of 8 points, and is guaranteed the A grade club champion title, even before he has played his chief rival, Anthony Ker. Bear in mind that Russell won the 2013 Club Championship with 9/9, so he is on course to repeat this feat.

Congratulations also to Jack Baker, easily the D grade champion, also with one game yet to play. He had a bit of a scare in round 9, being a piece down against Chris Sole, but he managed to scrape a draw. He won all the other games he has played - one more round to go in the D grade.

The B and C grades are still up for grabs, depending on the many catch-up games still to play in the next 3 weeks.

Club Champs Round 6 - Dive Rampages On

The leaders of the B and C group lost their unbeaten records on Thursday, while Russell Dive in the A group and Jack Baker in the D group continued their rampages.
Russell against me seemed to be in a hurry to get home, he played all his moves in about 20 minutes. He weakened my pawn structure in a way that was not fatal, but made it difficult to defend. Bill Forster continued his excellent form with a win against Brian Nijman.
In the B grade, the highest rated player Ross Jackson got his first win, having drawn all his previous games. The leader in this group is now Mark Wilkins, who ended Mike Roberts' undefeated run.
The C group had the most interesting results. Pat Cunningham was finally beaten, by Phillip Coghini, who must be considered a serious contender for this title. However the two of them should watch their back, the young Michael Sole has a perfect 3 out of 3, with rather a lot of games to catch up on.
The D grade continues to be plagued by no-shows and withdrawals, but there is no doubt who the favourite is here - Jack Baker is so far ahead of the rest, I really wish he could have been playing in the grade above.
