Anthony Ker Wins Autumn Cup 2014 A Grade

Preliminary report:
Congratulations Anthony Ker for winning his crucial game against Russell Dive and taking the Autumn Cup 2014 A grade title!

Grades B and C and E saw upsets that leave the titles undecided until after the catch-up games. A big pile-up in grade D means 3 joint winners, Lawrence Farrington, Andrew Brockway and Bob List - congratulations to them. And in the F grade Michael Sole maintains his half point lead by drawing with his closest rival, Troy Lamerton. One round to go.

More to follow, but here are the results.

Another Autumn Cup 2014 Round 4 Game

Here is another game from round 4 of the Autumn Cup. Many thanks to Nathan Rose for submitting this and annotating it - particularly as the game had rather a painful ending for him.

Autumn Cup 2014 Round 4 Results

Four rounds gone, and nothing decided yet!
All the grades have 5 rounds, apart from F which has 6. There are a few catch-up games to be played in grades A-E, but not as many as usual.

The crucial game in the A grade was Dive v Croad, which ended in a draw. Anthony beat me, so any of those 3 players could win the title.
Going well in the B grade are Michael Nyberg (3/3) and Layla Timergazi (3/4), and the winner of that grade will likely be one of them.
Efrain is the pacesetter in the C grade, with 3/3. The other players in this group seem to have no answers against him.
Group D makes a pretty picture - all the players are on 2/4! I've never seen anything like it!
Mike Asplet resumed his winning ways in Group E, with an important victory over his main rival, Karthik Konakanchi.
And in the F grade Michael Sole keeps winning, this time against Pramodh. Keeping up with him is another new player, Troy Lamerton, who has 3.5 points, having taken a half point bye in the first round and winning all his other games.

Here are the results and tables

Chess Variants Competition 14th June 2014

I received this message from artist Nova Jiang today:

"My name is Nova. I'm an Kiwi artist currently based in Los Angeles. I'm showing a chess related art project at Enjoy Gallery in Wellington from June 11 to July 5th. We wanted to reach out to the Wellington Chess Club to see if your membership would be interested in participating in a slightly unusual chess tournament.

First a bit about the project. I took 8 regional chess variants and used them as a system for digitally generating game pieces that sculpturally convey their rules of movement and capture, as well as their relative power on the board. These pieces are then 3D printed.

These variants include Thai Makruk/Cambodian Ouk Chatrang, Burmese Sittuyin, Mogolian Shatar, Chinese Xiangqi, Korean Jangqi, Japanese Shogi, as well as western chess and Shatrang, an ancestor of western chess popular in the Arabic world for centuries.

Some of these variants are very similar to Western chess, but games like Xiangqi are more difficult for people who can't read the characters to play. Hopefully, since my game pieces are designed to reflect the rules, players unfamiliar with the games can pick them up more easily. I have a theory that people who are good at chess will be good at all these other variants as well, if only the barriers of language can be removed.

The tournament I have in mind would involve players playing all 8 different games. I want to hold the tournament on June 14th, and I'm thinking of offering a prize of $250 NZD. The tournament will be free to the players."

Let me know if you want to take part!

Games from Autumn Cup 2014 Round 3

I'm finding myself a bit out of my league in the A grade, and am definitely looking forward to the next tournament! I have now suffered 3 defeats in a row. Here is the latest one against the top player Russell Dive:

After losing her first game against Michael Nyberg, Layla has come back strongly, winning her next two. Here is how she celebrated her 13th birthday:

Many thanks to Al Nicholls, Andrew Brockway, and the Sole brothers for contributing annotations to their games. Efrain Tionko has added a bit to his win against Al, which I've attached to the end.

And finally, here is Fabrizio playing really well against the leader of the E group:
