Chess club new venue progress

Chess club will be at St Peters Willis Street again this week, 4th September.

just to let everyone know where we are with the new (permanent) venue for the chess club -

Ross Jackson has done a lot of work contacting and visiting venues. It's surprising how little there is out there that is suitable, unfortunately.

1. We have definitely ruled out Philosophy House. The room is too small for the number of people we have
2. Ross and Alan had a look around the old Bowling Club, and deemed it unsuitable also, because of the location and the fencing noise, among other things
3. St Peters is possible. We will be there this Tuesday again, so we can get more of an idea of its pros and cons. The main con as I see it is the lack of a second room for analysis and friendly games. Also it was a pain having to put away the tables and chairs, it was ok with the people I had helping (thanks Ram and Alok), but the people who finish their games last tend to be people who don't help very much. Also, the lighting wasn't very good.
4. Alan, Ross and I had a look at the Wellington Bridge Club last night. This is a large comfortable playing room with also a large analysis room upstairs. Storage would be available, and we wouldn't have to put away tables, downstairs at least. There is even a kitchen hand available so washing up is pretty much sorted! The disadvantages would be having to move to a Thursday night (probably), and possibly the motorway noise for some people. At the end of our visit we spoke to some Bridge Club officials and they seemed very positive and welcoming.

The short list at this stage would seem to be St Peters and the Bridge Club. Neither of these venues are guaranteed, however, as we have to wait for the venues themselves to decide if they want us!

I'll keep you updated with any further developments. Any feedback as usual is very welcome.

Club Championship Round 5 at St Peters

The A grade schedule was severely ravaged by absences of one sort or another, and only one of the scheduled games actually took place. Anthony and I also played our round 8 game since neither of our opponents were there, and this resulted in a mauling for me.

The B grade looks very interesting, Alok Pandey is hanging in there in the lead but he is going to be challenged strongly, I think, by Ramarao Miriyala, who has won all the 3 games he has played so far. Also on 3 points is our wonderfully talented 11 year old Layla Timergazi, who won the classic youth versus experience match against Don Stracy.

The C grade has been thrown open by Ken Heaton suffering his first loss of the championship, against John Cook. Actually, this will be Ken's last game of the championship, as he is sadly unable to play any more games at the club until November. It's great to see another young talent near the top of the table in Josh Wight, and he will play on board 1 against John Cook next week.

This was our temporary accommodation on Tuesday, where we'll be also next week. This follows the sudden closure of Turnbull House due to earthquake fears. What do people think of St Peters (pictured above - thanks Matt)? Were you happy to play there? Would you rather play somewhere else?

Wellington Primary Interschool Competition

A report on the Wellington Primary Interschool Competition (by Scott Wastney)

The Wellington Primary Interschool was held at Johnsonville School on Friday 24th August.  Teams of four players play in a 6-round Swiss with clocks set for 15 minutes.

The winning team was Ngaio.  Their star player was Wellington Chess Club member Layla Timergazi who scored 6/6 on board 1.  The other players in the team were Boston Hart, William Scarlett (a relation of a former NZ champion Martin Dreyer), and Ben Harvey.  By winning the competition they are the Wellington representatives at the National School Finals, which is being jointly organised by Martin Sims and Mark Noble in Palmerston North on 29/30th September.

Second place was the van der Hoorn coached Thorndon A-team which included Wellington Chess Club player Andrew Sknar.  Then in third place was the Johnsonville A-team , a team with great potential since two of their players are only year 3 students.

I’d like to make a special mention on the Maungaraki team.  A keen parent, Doug Burdon, organises their school chess club even now after his children are no longer at the school.  The first time they entered they finished somewhere near the bottom, but each year since they finish higher on the table.  This time it was 5th place.

Here is the crosstable:

Place    Team                           Score

  1        Ngaio                          19.5
  2        Thorndon A               16.5
  3        Johnsonville A           16
  4        Eastern Hutt                15
 5-6      Maungaraki                 13.5
            Crofton Downs           13.5
  7        Newlands                    12
  8        Thorndon B                 11
  9        Johnsonville B             10.5
10-11  Cashmere                    10
            St Brigids B                10
12-13  Karori West                 9.5

Russell Dive off to the Olympiad

Russell and Nic from a few years back

One of our duo of International Masters, Russell Dive, has been selected to represent New Zealand at the World Team Championships in Istanbul, and will be heading off at the weekend. He will be on board 1 sitting next to Wellington Chess Club alumnus Nic Croad.

This is Russell's 9th chess Olympiad with his first one being in Thessaloniki, Greece in 1988.

He writes that his best game result at an Olympiad was beating Grandmaster Ashot Anastasian from Armenia with Black in round 1 of the 2004 Moscow Olympiad. His most memorial moments were getting an IM norm at the 2004 Moscow Olympiad, and playing Board 2 against the Ukraine in round 8 of the 2008 Dresden Olympiad, with Ivanchuk playing Murray Chandler in the board next to him

I have also just learnt that our top female player, Marany Meyer, will be heading to Istanbul too, as Sue Maroroa has had to pull out of the women's team. Marany has previously played Olympiad chess as part of the South African women's team

We wish Marany, Russell, Nic and the rest of the New Zealand players all the very best as they represent our corner of the chess world on the international stage.

Wellington Chess Club is moving!! ...

24-Aug-12 - Confirmed that we will definitely be in St Peter's church hall on 28th August. Watch this space for news of a permanent new home for the chess club

Cheers

Wellington Chess Club has been informed that we will no longer be able to use Turnbull House as our club rooms, because of earthquake strengthening work that needs to be done there. Very short notice - tonight is our last night there! We have to find a new venue by next week. We will be urgently looking for a new venue so that there will be minimum disruption to the club championship. If you know of a suitable venue, please let me or the committee know. Thanks

Update 22-Aug - looks like we'll be in St Peter's church hall on 28th August, but will confirm later. Thanks to John Gillespie for organising this.

Round 3 Games

The club championship has reverted to its normal state of events, with Russell Dive and Anthony Ker sharing the lead on 2.5/3 points. I handed Peter his first win of the A grade by succumbing to his superior Knights in the endgame.
Group B saw the return of Don Stracy from his travels, coming straight in and beating the leader Alok Pandey.
Group C has 2 players still on 3/3, Ken Heaton and Matt Veldhuizen. They will play each other next week.
